The GISS Land-Ocean Temperature Index put 2013 into the top ten warmest years in the global record, even though temperatures in the United States were not much warmer than usual.
Northern Hemisphere winter 2009–2010 temperatures were unusually cold across much of the United States, Canada, and Europe compared to previous winters this decade, while Greenland, North Africa, and the Middle East were warmer than usual.
Calendar year 2008 was the coolest year since 2000, but it was still in the top ten warmest years since the start of record-keeping in 1880. Most of Europe, Russia, and the Arctic were warmer than average, while much of the Pacific Ocean was cooler than usual.
