This infrared-enhanced image of the Pacific Northwest was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite on August 11, 2005. Including shortwave and near-infrared observations from MODIS in the image makes the burned areas of several fires in the region stand out in deep red. Vegetation is bright green, and naturally bare or sparsely vegetated land is tan or light pink. Active fires are outlined in red.
The high-resolution image provided above has a spatial resolution of 250 meters per pixel. The MODIS Rapid Response System provides this image at additional resolutions.NASA image courtesy the MODIS Rapid Response Team, Goddard Space Flight Center
