On December 8, 2007, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this image of fires burning on Kangaroo Island, just off the coast of South Australia. Places where the sensor detected active fire are outlined in red. Thick, gray-brown smoke spreads eastward over Encounter Bay. According to news reports from the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, the fires, many of them burning in parks and conservations areas, were still out of control as of December 10.
The large image provided above has a spatial resolution (level of detail) of 250 meters per pixel. The MODIS Rapid Response Team provides twice-daily images of the region in additional resolutions and formats.
