Off the coast of California, a large, fast-moving wildfire was forcing the evacuations of residents and tourists on Santa Catalina Island on May 10, 2007, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this image. The areas where MODIS detected actively burning fires are outlined in red.
The large image provided above has a spatial resolution (level of detail) of 250 meters per pixel. The MODIS Rapid Response Team provides twice-daily images of the region in additional resolutions.
