Smoke plumes continued traveling across the northern Atlantic Ocean on May 9, 2006. The smoke likely resulted from fires in Russia. Setting fires for agriculture is common in the springtime, and many of the fires causing the smoke over the Atlantic were likely human made.
The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) flying onboard the Aqua satellite took this picture on May 9, 2006. In this image, the smoke appears as a semi-transparent grayish haze. Thicker clouds appear in white.
