Fires were burning over a wide region of South America on September 8, 2002. This true-color image from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite shows fire locations marked with red dots. The image spans southern Bolivia (top), northern Argentina (center and bottom), and Uruguay (bottom right), with the Andes Mountains creating a sharp divide between those countries and Chile, on the Pacific Coast. At bottom right corner, the Rio de la Plata Estuary is visible.
