Fires in Yellowstone

Fires broke out in Yellowstone in September 2009. The Arnica Fire near Yellowstone Lake started on September 13 but grew dramatically starting on September 24, thanks to warm, dry weather.

Acquired September 27, 2009, this true-color image shows hotspots and smoke plumes associated with wildfires in northwestern Wyoming. The largest fire, Arnica, sends thick smoke plumes over Yellowstone Lake.
