Over the weekend, the Rodeo and Chediski Fires in Arizona grew explosively, and the two large fires are now beginning to merge. At lower left, the westernmost red dots (fire detections) are associated with the Chediski Fire and the easternmost with the Rodeo Fire. The Rodeo Fire is now 205,000 acres, and the Chediski is over 100,000. More than 200 structures have been lost in the two blazes, but many more hundreds have been saved by firefighters. This Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image was acquired Sunday, June 23, 2002.
Please note that the high-resolution scene provided here is 500 meters per pixel. For a copy of the scene at the sensor's fullest resolution, visit the MODIS Rapid Response Image Gallery.
