Scores of fires were burning in the Democratic Republic of Congo (top), Angola (bottom left), and Zambia (lower right) on May 9, 2002, early in the southern Africa fire season. This true-color image was acquired by the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite.
