Smoke over Montana

Smoke over Montana

Smoke sprawled over much of Montana on July 29, 2007. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this image the same day. This picture shows smoke mingling with clouds over Wyoming, Montana, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. The smoke appears especially thick where the borders of Montana, Alberta, and Saskatchewan meet. The smoke can be distinguished from the clouds by its duller color and more diffuse outlines.

As smoke collected over eastern Montana, wildfires burned in the western part of the state, as well as Idaho. The fires were the most likely source of the smoke.
