An overnight thunderstorm brought up to 410 millimeters (16 inches) of rain to southeastern Texas on May 28 and May 29, 2006, reported the Dartmouth Flood Observatory. The resulting floods were visible through a break in the clouds on the afternoon of May 29, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured the top image. Water, black and dark blue in this color combination, forms dark circular pools east of Trinity Bay. To the west, the city of Houston spreads like a silvery spider, cement-gray against the bright green vegetation. Clouds are pale blue and white. The lower image, taken on May 17, is provided to show normal conditions.
