Mason Fire in Southern Colorado

The Mason Fire in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in southern Colorado was causing considerable concern for residents and firefighters in the state. The fast-spreading fire forced evacuations and highway closures on July 10, 2005, and firefighters struggled to control the blaze, which was raging through drought-stressed forest and brush two miles south of the town of Wetmore. This image of the fire was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite on July 10, 2005. The actively burning portion of the fire that MODIS detected is outlined in red.
