On Friday, June 24, 2005, fires continued to spread in the desert Southwest. Unusually thick vegetation, a result of a wet winter, is fueling the fires, which are burning in California, Nevada, Arizona, and Utah.

The first wave of the 2005 fire season began in late June when lightning triggered dozens of fires across the Southwest. New fires continued to spring up in July.
