North of Australia’s Cape York Peninsula (bottom center), dozens of fires were burning across the island of New Guinea on October 20, 2003. The fires, which were detected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite, have been marked with red dots in the image. Smoke drifts to the northwest from many of the fires and hangs over the tip of Australia, as well.
