Smoke from Fires in Eastern Russia

This true-color image taken on May 11, 2003, by the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-View Sensor (SeaWiFS) shows a huge plume of smoke over northeastern China, eastern Russia, and the Sea of Japan. The smoke is likely due to wildfires in eastern Russia and pollution from China. On the large image, one can also see greenish to reddish phytoplankton blooms in the Sea of Okhotsk north of the smoke plume.
