This true-color image from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Aqua satellite shows several large fires burning in the steppes of Kazakhstan (bottom and center) as well as smaller, scattered agricultural fires (top). All active fires are marked with red dots (or outlines in the high-resolution images). The image was acquired on September 21, 2002.
These images of southern Russia (top) and Kazakhstan (bottom) from August through October 2002 reveal scattered fires burning over an already widely burned region. Fires have burned in the region on and off all summer long, leaving their dark marks across the landscape.
