On July 26, 2013, the Advanced Land Imager (ALI) on NASA’s Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite captured this image of the Lodgepole fire burning in central Idaho. Ignited by lightning on July 20, 2013, the fire burned through lodgepole pine forests about 10 miles (16 kilometers) west of Challis, Idaho. By August 2, it had burned 19,960 acres (8,078 hectares). The lower image, a photograph taken by Jace James, shows the fire burning near Bear Creek on July 29, 2013.
