Fires Scorch Oregon

In southwestern Oregon, the Florence Fire (west of center) and the Sour Biscuit Fire (to the south) continue to grow explosively. This image from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) was captured on July 27, 2002. As of July 29, the Florence Fire had grown to 50,000 acres and the Sour Biscuit Fire had grown to 16,000 acres. Numerous evacuation notices remain in effect. Meanwhile, smoke from the Tiller Complex Fire (north) and the Timbered Rock Fire (south) fills the center of the image.
