Fifteen fires covering more than 150,000 acres were burning in Oregon as of July 19, 2002. This Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from July 18, 2002, shows smoke from some of the largest fires spreading north into Canada.

Several large wildfires burned out of control in Oregon through most of July and into August 2002, while there was also fire activity in Washington and California.
