Fires and Deforestation in Brazil

In central and eastern Brazil, scores of wildfires (red dots) were detected by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite on August 27, 2002. Fires in the country’s remaining tropical forests are at the top of the image, while wetlands (lower left) and plains (right) are affected as well.
