On September 7, 2014, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this image of the Happy Camp Complex fire burning in Klamath National Forest. Red outlines indicate hot spots where MODIS detected unusually warm surface temperatures associated with fire.

Lightning ignited a fire near Happy Camp, California, in August that had burned over 99,000 acres (40,000 hectares) as of September 9, 2014.
