Several huge forest fires were burning in northern Manitoba, Canada, on July 20, 2007, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite passed overhead and captured this image. Places where MODIS detected active fire are outlined in red. Huge clouds of brownish-gray smoke spread from the fires. The largest blaze is burning north of the town of Nelson House. According to news reports, communities near Southern Indian Lake had been evacuated due to hazardous air quality.
The large image provided above has a spatial resolution (level of detail) of 250 meters per pixel. The MODIS Rapid Response Team provides the image in additional resolutions.
