Fires in Idaho

Parallel plumes of smoke blow northeast from several fires burning in central Idaho’s Salmon River Mountains in this image captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite on August 23, 2006. Places where MODIS detected actively burning fires are outlined in red. Although much of the Salmon River Mountains region is wilderness area, there are scattered communities, and some of the fires are threatening homes, campgrounds, and power lines.

The high-resolution image provided above has a spatial resolution of 250 meters per pixel. The MODIS Rapid Response System provides images of the entire western United States at additional resolutions.
