On the northern rim of the Grand Canyon, the Poplar Complex Fire (red outline) had grown to more than 7,500 acres as of September 30, 2003. Lightning started the fire on September 4, and fire managers have been allowing the fire to burn to achieve natural resource objectives. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra satellite captured this image of the fire on September 28, 2003.
