On the island of Montserrat in the Caribbean Sea, the Soufriere Hills volcano began erupting in late December 2002. The eruption continued into the new year, and this image of plume streaming northwestward from the island was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on January 6, 2003.
