Fires Along the Volga River

This true-color scene covers the floodplain of the Volga River (which runs from top to bottom in the center of this image), situated in Southern Russia. Many fires (red pixels) can be seen burning throughout the region. The city of Samara is situated on the east side of the river’s oxbow bend (center).

This image was acquired by the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), flying aboard NASA’s Terra satellite. Please note that the high-resolution scene provided here is 500 meters per pixel. For a copy of this scene at the sensor’s fullest resolution, visit the MODIS Rapidfire site.
