Fires in Northern Australia

June 9, 2014

Several larges fires were burning in Australia’s Northern Territory on June 9, 2014, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired this image. The fires are outlined in red. The grasslands of northern Australia are prone to fires during the winter dry season. June is at the beginning of the dry season, so fires tend to be smaller than in later months.
