Ash, Steam, and Snow at Karymsky Volcano

Ash, Steam, and Snow at Karymsky Volcano

For over a decade, Karymsky Volcano has been spewing gas and ash into the air over Kamchatka. On January 28, 2014 the Advanced Land Imager (ALI) on the Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite captured this natural-color image of a volcanic plume above the volcano. Light gray areas likely indicate a dusting of ash on top of the midwinter snow. Darker gray streaks radiating from the summit are probably debris that has tumbled down the mountain slopes, ejected during bursts of strombolian activity.
