Steam escapes from the lava dome of Russia’s Bezymianny volcano in this satellite image. Brilliant white snow covers most of the mountainous terrain, possibly coated with ash on the volcano’s southern slopes. Dark material, likely deposits from rockfalls or lahars, extends southeast from the lava dome. The horseshoe-shaped crater of Bezymianny is the result of a flank collapse that occurred in 1955. This image was acquired by the Advanced Land Imager (ALI) aboard NASA’s Earth Observing-1 (EO-1) satellite on January 20, 2010.
