ice shelf
A thick mass of ice extending from a polar shore. The seaward edge is afloat and sometimes extends hundreds of kilometers over the sea. Ice shelves generally fall into three categories: those fed by glaciers, those created by sea ice, and composite shelves incorporating both glacier- and sea-ice-supplied ice.
