The Soufriere Hills Volcano on the Caribbean island of Montserrat remained active in late December 2008, steadily releasing plumes of ash and/or steam.
On December 2, 2008, an explosion occurred on the west side of the Soufriere Hills lava dome. Volcanic material flowed through the city of Plymouth, setting some buildings on fire.
