Fires Along the Volga River

Fires Along the Volga River

Fires (red dots) were burning near the Volga River, seen in the western portion of this Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from August 2, 2002. The Volga River can be seen emptying into the Caspian Sea in western Russia. The large smoke plume across the top of the image is coming from additional fires burning near Moscow.
