Aleutian Von Karman Vortices
This page contains archived content and is no longer being updated. At the time of publication, it represented the best available science. However, more recent observations and studies may have rendered some content obsolete.
As air flows over and around objects in its path, spiraling eddies, known as Von Karman
vortices, may form. The vortices in this image were created when prevailing winds
sweeping east across the northern Pacific Ocean ecountered Alaska's Aleutian Islands.
This image was acquired by Landsat 7’s
Enhanced Thematic Mapper plus (ETM+) sensor.
