Fires in Southeastern Russia

In southeastern Russia, scores of fires were burning near the border of the Amur and Khabarovsk Provinces on June 23, 2008. This natural-color image of the region was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite. Places where MODIS detected actively burning fires are marked in red. Thick smoke nearly hides the landscape below. According to Russia’s ITAR-TASS news service, more than 15,000 hectares (about 60 square miles) of forests were burning in the Amur region and areas to the northwest.
