Large Fires in Mongolia

Large Fires in Mongolia

On April 23, 2006, large fires were burning in the foothills of the mountains that separate Russia (north) from Mongolia (south). The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this image of the fires (actively burning areas outlined in red) and their accompanying large burn scars (dark brown). The smoke is blowing southeastward. To the southeast, a burn scar more than 50 kilometers across darkens the light tan landscape.

The high-resolution image provided above has a spatial resolution of 250 meters per pixel. The MODIS Rapid Response System provides this image at additional resolutions.
