Fires in Northeast Alaska and Canada

In northeast Alaska near the headwaters of the Yukon River, a large fire was producing a huge plume of smoke on July 1, 2003. This Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from the Aqua satellite shows the actively burning parts of the fire marked with a red outline. In the larger image, additional fires can be seen in Alaska and Canada, to the east. At top are the ice-choked waters of the Beaufort Sea.

The high-resolution image provided above is 500 meters per pixel. The MODIS Rapid Response System provides this image at MODIS? maximum spatial resolution of 250 meters.
