Fires in Mexico and Central America

Heavy smoke hangs in the air over southern Mexico and the Yucatan Peninsula on May 4, 2002. The Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Terra satellite captured this image of smoke and scores of fires (red dots).

Please note that the high-resolution scene provided here is 500 meters per pixel. For a copy of this scene at the sensor’s fullest resolution, visit the MODIS Rapidfire site.
