Flooding along the Missouri River

Flooding continued along the Missouri River in mid-June 2011. On June 16, the Advanced Hydrological Prediction Service of the U.S. National Weather Service reported moderate flooding in Nebraska near Blair, Omaha, Plattsmouth, Nebraska City, and Brownville.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured these images on June 15, 2011 (top), and June 17, 2010 (bottom). Both images use a combination of visible and infrared light to increase contrast between water and land. Water ranges from electric blue to navy. Land varies in color from brown to green, depending on vegetation. Clouds vary from off-white to blue-green, and cast shadows.

In June 2011, the Missouri River appears to have spilled onto floodplains from north of Blair to south of Brownville. Flooding is especially apparent between Blair and Omaha, and Nebraska City and Brownville.
