Wildfires in Northern Australia

Wildfires burned along Australia’s northern coast on June 5, 2010. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite took this picture the same day. The red outlines are hotspots associated with wildfires, and many of the fires appear in large clusters spanning tens of kilometers. The wildfires send smoke toward the west or northwest. The thickest smoke appears east-southeast of the coastal city of Darwin.
