Fires in Southwestern Australia

Fires in Southwestern Australia

Several large fires were burning in the forests of the Darling Range in southwestern Australia on May 10, 2006. The fires may be controlled burns, set to manage forest land in an effort to prevent large, uncontrolled forest fires, or they may have natural causes. This photo-like image of the fires was acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite on the afternoon of May 10. Thick plumes of smoke rise from the flames, and the fires themselves have been outlined in red. Daily images of southwestern Australia are available from the MODIS Rapid Response Team.
