Fires in the Southern United States

On March 26, 2006, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite captured an image of numerous fires burning across the Southern Plains in the United States. Fires (marked in red) were detected across parts of Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Missouri. According to news reports, some planned fires got out of control in Oklahoma and Kansas because of gusty winds.

The high-resolution image provided above has a spatial resolution of 250 meters per pixel. The MODIS Rapid Response System provides this image at additional resolutions.
