School Fire in Washington

In southeastern Washington, the School Fire was raging through the Umatilla National Forest about 16 miles south of the town of Pomery. According to reports from the National Interagency Fire Center on August 8, 2005, the fire had grown to 32,000 acres and was not at all contained. This image of the region was captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite on August 7. It shows thick smoke pouring from the burning forest and spreading across Idaho and into Montana. Areas where MODIS detected active fire are outlined in red.
