Sheveluch Volcano Erupts

A light cloud of ash and stream streams away from the Sheveluch Volcano on Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula. Rising to an elevation of 3,283 meters, the volcano is one of Kamchatka’s largest and most active volcanoes. It has been erupting on and off for much of 2004, including an explosive eruption in May. The current eruption, captured by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite on October 5, 2004, appears to be smaller. The ash and steam plume is drifting east away from the snow-capped volcano towards the Bering Sea.
