Fires on Cape York Peninsula Australia

Across the Cape York Peninsula in Queensland, Australia, large fires have been burning in the region’s tropical savannas and eastern forests throughout October 2003. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra satellite captured this image on October 23. Pixels where MODIS detected an actively burning fire are outlined in red and filled with yellow. The smoke from these fires is creating a haze over the region. Along the eastern margin of the peninsula, the Great Barrier Reef stretches out in the Coral Sea.
