Bushfires Raging in Southeast Australia

Firefighters in southeast Australia got a small break over the weekend of Jan. 25, as cool, damp weather gave an opportunity for fire control lines to be established around many threatened communities. Conditions are expected to become dangerous by mid-week, with temperatures over 100 degrees Fahrenheit and gusty winds. So far the blazes in Victoria and New South Wales have scorched more than 1 million acres.

This true-color Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image from the Aqua satellite on January 28, 2003, shows the fires marked in red.
