How do other nations compare anyway?

It would be interesting to see if NASA is duplicating other nations' efforts or whether they all have the field well covered.
I follow ESA, and (from living in Japan) see the latest on Japanese work, but haven't a clue about China, Russia, India, etc.

NASA, how about recalculating this indicator on a global scale?
TIA!

Sad to hear of the decline.

@Cynthia: Why should any one nation be the leader? It should be an international effort, as players in different countries have much to offer. Keeping everything in-house (e.g. NASA) is not a sustainable plan. Funding these missions is an enormous task, and keeping it "US" will only hurt you guys and the science.

Why should anyone be surprised by this? Between the God crowd and the scientifically and politically ignorant(they are not mutually exclusive) what do you expect? Every year NASA takes a hit and/or some crap about it is too expensive or the work it does does not matter. Enough is enough.

This is truly disheartening and bad news. The U.S. needs to remain the leader on this and the leader in space. I am disgusted by what I am seeing.
