Fires in Western Russia

Many fires (red pixels) were seen burning in Western Russia on April 10, 2002. Lake Peipus, which is located due south of the Gulf of Finland, is visible in the upper left corner of this scene. The still snow-covered Rybinsk Reservoir can be seen about 550 km (340 miles) due east of Lake Peipus. Moscow, Russia’s capital, is situated roughly 250 km (155 miles) due south of this reservoir.

This true-color image was acquired by the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), flying aboard NASA’s Terra satellite.

Please note that the high-resolution scene provided here is 500 meters per pixel. For a copy of this scene at the sensor’s fullest resolution, visit the MODIS Rapidfire site.
