Fires in Mexico and Central America

Fires continue to burn throughout Mexico at the end of May. These fires have been burning for over a month now. The fires are concentrated in the Sierra Madres, along the country’s western coastline. The fires in the north appear to be making less smoke than those to the south. This image was acquired on May 31, 2002 by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra satellite.

Please note that the high-resolution scene provided here is 500 meters per pixel. For a copy of the scene at the sensor's fullest resolution, visit the MODIS Rapid Response Image Gallery.
