Funny River Fire, Alaska

Funny River Fire, Alaska

Driven by strong winds, the Funny River Fire burned more than 182,000 acres in south-central Alaska by the morning of May 27, 2014. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired this image at 1:45 p.m. on May 26. Active fire areas are outlined in red. The fire was burning in a hardwood and spruce forest and in grass that was dried out by an early, warm spring. The fire produced significant amounts of smoke that affected air quality across the Kenai Peninsula.
