Floods in Northeast Thailand

Since late July 2013, Thailand has faced floods that have affected more than 3.5 million people. The flood were the result of unusually intense seasonal rainfall and a string of tropical cyclones.

The clouds from the latest storm, Typhoon Nari, had just cleared when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired the top image on October 18. The lower image, also from Aqua MODIS, was taken on October 15, 2012, and shows a more typical river state for the season. The false-color images (made with visible and infrared light) focus on the swollen Mun and Chi Rivers in northeast Thailand. Water is black, while plant-covered land is green and clouds are pale blue and white.
